North Dakota livestock summit unveils agriculture opportunities

North Dakota livestock summit unveils agriculture opportunities

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota Livestock Alliance recently hosted its fifth annual summit in Fargo, presenting a promising outlook for animal agriculture. Key discussions included the benefits for soybean farmers, financial assistance for producers, and new prospects in the swine industry.

The event featured insights from industry experts, highlighting the evolving landscape of livestock production in North Dakota.

With the relaxation of the state's corporate farming law, North Dakota has become an attractive location for livestock companies nationwide. This change has set the stage for significant growth in the state's livestock sector, according to John Schneider of the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.

The state offers various programs to support this expansion, including financial assistance for eligible individuals and companies.

The development of two soybean processing plants, Green Bison Energy and North Dakota Soybean Processors LLC, is poised to boost the local livestock industry.

These plants will produce soybean meal and soy-hull pellets for animal feed, offering a cost-effective and locally sourced feed option for hog and cattle producers. The soybean meal could significantly reduce feed costs for hog producers in the state.

The anticipated increase in livestock production is expected to positively impact local farmers through manure as a natural fertilizer. This "liquid gold" is touted for its benefits to crop fertility, further integrating crops and livestock farming in North Dakota.

This summit underscores the interconnected growth opportunities within North Dakota's agricultural sectors, aiming to strengthen the state's position in the national agriculture landscape.
