North Dakota honors 49 top teachers for 2024

By Scout Nelson

In a recent announcement, Kirsten Baesler, the State School Superintendent of North Dakota, celebrated the exceptional dedication of 49 educators named as County Teachers of the Year. This accolade honors their remarkable leadership both in their schools and within their communities.

“These County Teachers of the Year are examples of educational excellence, who have been recognized as such by their colleagues, their students and their families,” said Superintendent Baesler.

She highlighted the critical role these educators play in both rural and urban areas throughout North Dakota, bringing skills, compassion, and dedication to their classrooms.

The 2024 awardees come from a diverse range of schools across North Dakota. LaMoure County recognized two winners due to a tie in the scoring metrics, contributing to 49 teachers from 48 counties. These educators represent the pinnacle of educational achievement and are nominated by a mix of their students, family members, colleagues, and administrators.

The recognition is part of a broader initiative under Baesler’s leadership to expand the Teacher of the Year program, aiming for representation from all 53 counties in North Dakota.

The county awards serve as a stepping stone for these educators, making them eligible for the prestigious state Teacher of the Year award.

The upcoming 2025 state honor will be announced in a ceremony at the state Capitol on September 27, where the new awardee will succeed Sheila Peterson, the current titleholder.

This rigorous selection process began with 356 educators nominated by their communities, with 183 applying and being meticulously reviewed and scored to select the winners.

Baesler’s goal through these awards is to not only recognize outstanding educators but also to foster a culture of excellence and innovation in education throughout the state, emphasizing that the impact of these teachers extends far beyond their local communities.
