NDSU Western Equestrian Team Competes at Semi-Finals


Five members of the North Dakota State University equestrian team traveled to Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, March 23-24 to compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Western Semi-finals Competition. Each rider placed in individual events, and two will advance on to the IHSA Nationals May 3-5 at Tryon International in Mill Spring, North Carolina.

Kooper Shagena, a senior journalism major from Horace, North Dakota, and Dakota Tierney, a sophomore equine science major from Manvel, North Dakota, earned top four placings and will compete at nationals.

Riders representing NDSU and their placings are:

  • Shagena – reserve champion in reining
  • Tierney – third in ranch riding
  • Haley Maro, junior equine science major, Monticello, Minnesota – seventh in level II horsemanship
