NDSU Receives Gift for Sustainable Crop Research

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University (NDSU) has received a $3 million gift from Richard ’65 and Linda Offerdahl to advance important agricultural research focused on sustainable crop production. The funding supports the work of NDSU scientist Barney Geddes and his team as they continue developing new solutions that may change the future of farming.

The investment helps accelerate research on biological nitrogen fixation in cereal crops. The project focuses on creating natural partnerships between plants and helpful microbes so crops such as barley can obtain nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. This approach has the potential to reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers, lower production costs for farmers, improve environmental sustainability, and increase access to essential crop nutrients around the world.

“Atmospheric nitrogen fixation has been described as the holy grail,” said Richard Offerdahl. “We were offered a partnership in making this happen. Let’s do it!”

The latest gift builds on previous support from the Offerdahls, which helped Geddes and his research team make important scientific progress. The new funding allows researchers to continue developing this promising technology while moving closer to practical agricultural applications.

“Building on the remarkable progress achieved through the Richard and Linda Offerdahl Faculty Fellowship, this new gift commitment will support the next phase of our program,” Geddes said. “Together, these efforts represent an important step toward a future where cereal production relies less on synthetic nitrogen fertilizer.”

Researchers recognize that developing biological nitrogen fixation for cereal crops remains one of agriculture’s most difficult scientific challenges. Continued research requires long-term investment, dedicated teamwork, and ongoing financial support to achieve meaningful results.

“Richard and Linda are invested in the work of Dr. Barney Geddes and his research team in a way that is truly distinctive at NDSU,” said John R. Glover, president and CEO of the NDSU Foundation. “Their philanthropy is inspirational to the entire NDSU community and is a model for how our alumni and friends care about what can be accomplished here. We are immensely grateful for all they do to support NDSU.”

More information on Geddes’ research is available on the lab website.
