The North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences is organizing a public event called "Plants, Local Foods, and Outdoor Spaces" on July 25 from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will take place at the NDSU Horticulture Research and Demonstration Gardens located on the NDSU campus in Fargo, North Dakota.
The event will include guided walking tours of the annual and perennial flower gardens, which are recognized as an official All-America Selections bedding plant display garden. These gardens serve as a testing ground for evaluating over 200 cultivars of annual bedding plants under the challenging growing conditions of North Dakota. The plants are assessed based on their growth, flowering, and overall uniformity.
The event has been scheduled to coincide with the peak bloom of daylilies. NDSU boasts the largest institutional collection of daylilies in the country, and the Historic Daylily Garden is particularly stunning during its peak bloom.
There will be informative talks delivered by Joseph Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester, and Don Kinzler, Extension horticulture agent for Cass County, under a large tent. Zeleznik will discuss the recent discovery of emerald ash borer in the region, while Kinzler will provide insights on creating exceptional annual flowerbeds and containers.
Children's activities, including a pollinator-themed scavenger hunt, will be available. Extension Master Gardeners will be present to accept donations of fresh garden produce and canned goods to support the Fargo Emergency Food Pantry.
Limited parking is available on the north side of the garden, with overflow parking directed to parking lot TA on 12th Avenue.
