NDSU Assistant Honored by PATH Intl

By Scout Nelson

Jessie Bailey, serving as a program assistant at NDSU Bison Strides, has been named the 2024 Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) Equine Caretaker of the Year.

This prestigious award is given to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional care and dedication in a PATH International Center, significantly enhancing the quality of life for horses that provide therapeutic support.

Bailey's work at NDSU Bison Strides has been instrumental in transforming lives through equine-assisted services. Her commitment extends beyond routine care; she plays a crucial role in the therapeutic journeys of children, veterans, and other participants. Under her care, individuals with various physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges experience remarkable improvements, such as children walking or sleeping through the night for the first time, and veterans learning better emotional regulation.

The program, directed by Erika Berg, associate professor of animal sciences at NDSU, relies heavily on the health and well-being of its horses. Berg praises Bailey's dedication, stating, "Jessie is an incredible human being who ensures our horses are healthy and happy, which is vital as without them, we have no program."

PATH Intl. values the advancement of equine-assisted services through rigorous standards and education, aiming to make a lifelong impact on participants. Bailey's recognition highlights her significant contribution to the field, driven by a deep passion for both equine welfare and human healing.

Expressing her gratitude, Bailey acknowledges the support from her mentors and family, which has fueled her passion for horses and enabled her to contribute meaningfully to the community. Her award underscores the importance of equine caretakers in therapeutic settings and celebrates the profound impact of compassionate, high-quality care on the lives of both horses and humans involved in such programs.
