NDSU Adds New Bird Flu Safety Session

NDSU Adds New Bird Flu Safety Session

By Scout Nelson

NDSU Extension adds a new session to its bird flu prevention education series for producers across North Dakota. The new free, in-person meeting takes place on January 14 in Beulah. This session focuses on highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as HPAI, which continues to affect poultry and dairy operations in the region.

Farmers, ranchers, and backyard flock owners can attend to learn simple and clear steps to protect their animals and workers. The session is led by Dr. Jake Galbreath, a veterinarian with North Dakota State University Extension. He shares science-based guidance that helps reduce the risk of disease and supports healthy farm operations.

“Recent detections of bird flu in wild birds and domestic poultry underscore the importance of strong biosecurity practices and timely reporting,” says Dr. Galbreath. “These educational sessions aim to equip both commercial producers and backyard flock owners with science-based guidance to reduce risk and protect their operations.”

During the meeting, participants learn how bird flu spreads and how to spot early signs of illness in poultry, dairy cattle, and even humans. The session explains effective hygiene and biosecurity steps for farms of all sizes. It also includes guidance on the proper use of personal protective equipment, also known as PPE. Seasonal flu vaccination tips are shared to help protect farm workers. Producers also receive clear instructions on how and when to report suspected HPAI cases.

The meeting offers live demonstrations, current information, and open discussion. A question-and-answer period allows attendees to talk about local concerns and share best practices.

The Beulah session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on January 14 at the Beulah Civic Center, located at 120 7th Street NE, Beulah. Registration and details are available online.

This education series is part of a larger partnership involving state health agencies, NDSU Extension, and animal science teams. The goal is to strengthen biosecurity, protect farm labor, reduce disease risks, and support strong and safe agriculture across North Dakota.
