Honey Kits Help Students Learn About Agriculture

Honey Kits Help Students Learn About Agriculture

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is making Honey Tasting Educational Kits available to selected classrooms. The program gives students an engaging way to learn about agriculture, honey production, pollinators, and food systems through hands-on STEM activities.

The educational kits are designed for students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Through tasting activities and classroom lessons, students gain a better understanding of the role that honey bees play in agriculture and the importance of pollination in food production. The kits also help students connect classroom learning with real-world agricultural practices.

Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring encouraged teachers to take advantage of this opportunity. He said, “We encourage teachers to bring this interactive STEM kit to their classrooms to give students a hands-on taste of North Dakota agriculture.”

Teachers who are interested in receiving a kit can apply through the Ag in the Classroom program. The kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Applications are accepted until November 30, giving eligible schools an opportunity to participate in the educational program.

The initiative aims to increase agricultural awareness among students and introduce them to the importance of farming and specialty crop production. It also helps young learners understand how agricultural products move from farms to consumers.

This educational effort is supported by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program Farm Bill Activities. The funding helps create learning opportunities that strengthen agricultural education in schools.
