Free mental health first aid training in Casselton

By Scout Nelson

On June 4, 2024, from 8:30 am to 5 pm CDT, the Central Cass School District STEM Center in Casselton, ND, will be the venue for an invaluable Mental Health First Aid training session.

This training, collaboratively presented by NDSU Extension and FirstLink, is designed to equip adults with the knowledge and skills necessary to aid those facing mental health challenges or substance use issues.

Beneficial for individuals connected to or working within the agricultural sector, this session emphasizes the importance of mental well-being in sustaining the industry's backbone.

Mental Health First Aid training is recognized for its evidence-based approach to educating participants on recognizing, understanding, and effectively responding to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

It includes practical skills such as active listening, offering support, and guiding someone towards professional help. The upcoming session promises an immersive 8-hour experience with an additional 30 minutes of self-study required before attending.

With a capacity limited to 30 participants, interested individuals are encouraged to register promptly to secure their place. The training, including registration and materials, is offered free, courtesy of the ND Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Center grant (USDA-NIFA). Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are available for those who complete the training.

For more information or to register, please contact Sean Brotherson at sean.brotherson@ndsu.edu or call 701-231-6143.

This training represents a crucial step toward fostering a community well-equipped to support mental and emotional health, reflecting the commitment of NDSU Extension and FirstLink to the well-being of North Dakota's agricultural community and beyond.
