Farm families often face challenges when planning for future ownership and control of their land and operations. To support these families, free one-day farm succession planning workshops take place at two different locations in North Dakota.
The workshops focus on helping families build a long-term plan for farm and ranch ownership. They provide clear steps to begin important family discussions about future leadership, land use, and business control. These sessions support families who want to protect their operations and reduce confusion during ownership changes.
Participants learn how to start healthy conversations with family members about the future of the farm. The workshops explain how to develop a written succession plan that reflects family goals, values, and business needs. Families also learn how to prepare for meetings with legal and financial professionals who help complete formal plans.
The training introduces practical tools that guide families through early planning stages. It explains how legal documents, financial plans, and clear communication help prevent conflict and protect family relationships. These sessions highlight the value of planning early to avoid sudden decisions caused by illness, retirement, or unexpected events.
Workshops run from morning to late afternoon and include lunch. Space remains limited to ensure strong learning support. Registration is required before attending.
The program is offered by a statewide farm organization in partnership with an agricultural extension service. These groups work together to provide trusted education for farmers and ranchers.
Farm succession planning plays a key role in long-term farm success. It helps younger family members prepare for leadership roles and allows older farmers to plan for retirement with peace of mind. A clear plan also helps maintain business stability, improve communication, and protect family assets.
Educational programs like these build stronger rural communities by keeping farms active across generations. When families understand the planning process, they gain confidence and improve long-term decision-making. These free workshops provide a valuable learning opportunity for families who want to prepare for the future of their farms and ranches. register at membership.ndfu.org or thru the NDFU app. For more information, call 800-366-6338 or email amcclean@ndfu.org.
