Enhancing farm to school connections in North Dakota

Enhancing farm to school connections in North Dakota

By Scout Nelson

On November 20, 2023, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm CT, the Williston Research Extension Center in North Dakota will become a hub of agricultural knowledge and opportunity. This event, organized by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Department of Instruction, is dedicated to the Farm to School Program.

The event's core is an informative session aimed at local producers. It will delve into the types of foods schools are looking to purchase from local sources and provide guidance on how to effectively sell and overcome barriers in selling to schools. This initiative is not only a step towards better nutrition in schools but also a boon for local agriculture.

Understanding the geographical challenges of North Dakota, the event is made accessible virtually, ensuring wider participation. Attendees, especially producers, are encouraged to register their presence, which is not mandatory but beneficial. Registered producers will gain the chance to be included on the North Dakota local foods map, a valuable resource for increasing visibility.

Acknowledging the effort in attending, the organizers offer reimbursement for travel and lodging expenses for those traveling over 60 miles round trip. This gesture underlines the event's commitment to inclusivity and support for the agricultural community.

Refreshments will be provided for attendees, adding a touch of hospitality to the event. Those interested in attending can register at the online link provided, ensuring their spot in this significant agricultural gathering.
