Thanks to a grant award from the High Plains Intermountain Center for Agriculture Health and Safety (HICAHS), the Colorado Livestock Association (CLA) provided two live cattle handling demonstration seminars in April and June 2023 focusing on stockmanship, animal handling, and transportation safety. Following the live events, CLA produced training videos capturing the key messages to aid in stockmanship and transportation training for CLA members. The videos are now available in English and Spanish on CLA’s website!
The training videos feature industry experts Dr. Dean Fish, Stockmanship Clinician, Ranch Manager, Santa Fe Ranch, and Libby Bigler, Colorado Beef Quality Assurance Coordinator, who provided low-stress cattle handling and loading demonstrations, scoring systems for body condition and mobility, fitness for transport assessments, and many other resources.
During the live events, producers received hands-on training in best management practices to improve operations, promote safety for workers as well as animal welfare, and received firsthand principles of Beef Quality Assurance.
A Handling and Transportation Safety Guidelines reference document will be available in English and Spanish very soon! Stay tuned!
