Cyanobacteria blooms are becoming a greater concern for livestock producers as drought, high temperatures, and stagnant water create conditions that support their growth.
North Dakota State University Extension specialists, working with the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, are advising livestock owners to manage water sources carefully and reduce conditions that support these blooms.
In 2026, the NDDEQ samples 40 lakes to monitor toxic cyanobacteria.
Although state monitoring focuses on lakes and reservoirs, cyanobacteria blooms can also develop in ponds and other water sources used by livestock. This has led producers to seek safe ways to manage affected water.
“Unfortunately, options for treating cyanobacteria blooms are limited for North Dakota,” says Miranda Meehan, NDSU Extension livestock environmental stewardship specialist.
Copper sulfate is found in many products used to control cyanobacteria, but its effectiveness can be limited by North Dakota’s natural water chemistry.
Copper sulfate can also create risks for aquatic life and livestock. Sheep and goats are especially sensitive to copper toxicity.
Treatment can also cause cyanobacteria to die quickly and release toxins into the water. Keep animals away from treated water for 7 to 10 days after treatment.
Producers can manage fertilizers carefully, maintain perennial buffer strips, and mow or graze those areas in fall. Installing alternate livestock water sources and fencing can also reduce animal access to ponds.
