Safe Disposal of Unusable Pesticides for Public and Agricultural Benefit

Safe Disposal of Unusable Pesticides for Public and Agricultural Benefit

In an effort to promote safe and legal disposal of unusable pesticides, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring encourages farmers, ranchers, pesticide dealers and applicators, government agencies, homeowners, and the general public to participate in the 12 Project Safe Send collections happening throughout July.

Project Safe Send accepts old, unusable, or banned pesticides, funded by manufacturers' product registration fees, allowing free disposal of these chemicals for participants.

Goehring recommends that people inspect their pesticide storage for unsuitable pesticides and set them aside for Project Safe Send. Pack decaying containers in larger absorbent containers. The North Dakota Department of Agriculture offers heavy-duty plastic bags for free.

Pre-registration is required for those with over 1,000 pounds of pesticides, while no other pre-registration is necessary for smaller amounts. Each participant is limited to a maximum of 5,000 pounds of pesticides and can bring only one shuttle's worth of materials.

For pre-registration, obtaining plastic bags, or further information, individuals can contact Aubrey Sondrol at the North Dakota Department of Agriculture through phone at 701-425-3016 or email at alsondrol@nd.gov.

The collection events will take place from 8 a.m. to noon local time at the North Dakota Department of Transportation facilities located in the following cities:
