North Dakota hosts farm to school program event

North Dakota hosts farm to school program event

By Scout Nelson

An informative event focusing on the North Dakota Farm to School Program is scheduled for Dec 11, 2023, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm CT. Hosted at the Spirit Lake Casino & Resort in St Michael, ND, this event is a collaborative effort by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Department of Instruction.

The session aims to educate local producers about opportunities in selling produce to schools, addressing potential barriers and enhancing local food sourcing in educational institutions. Participants will gain insights into what foods schools are looking to purchase and the processes involved.

This event also offers a unique opportunity for producers to register with the Department of Agriculture and get listed on the North Dakota local foods map, a resource for schools to find and source local produce.

To encourage wide participation, refreshments will be provided, and travel and lodging reimbursement is available for eligible attendees traveling more than 60 miles round trip. While registration for the event is encouraged, it is not mandatory, allowing for flexible attendance.

The contact for the event is Lindy Berg, reachable at lindy.l.berg@ndsu.edu or by phone on 701-968-4362. This event represents a significant step towards strengthening the connection between local agriculture and educational institutions, benefiting both North Dakota's farming community and its students.
