North Dakota Awards AmeriCorps Funding to Boost Community Services

In a recent announcement by the North Dakota Department of Commerce, five notable projects are set to receive AmeriCorps funding amounting to nearly $1.5 million.

Katie Ralston Howe, the Commerce Workforce Director, voiced her pleasure at the rollout of these funds, emphasizing AmeriCorps' unwavering dedication to meeting community needs across the state. She expressed gratitude to all AmeriCorps members, past and present, for their service.

A glimpse at the grant beneficiaries:

Cooperstown Community Activities secured over $90,000 in federal funds, matching a similar amount, with 8 AmeriCorps members focusing on education and promoting healthy futures.

Jamestown Parks and Recreation bagged over $40,000 in federal funds, supplemented with over $25,000 in matching funds. Their 10 AmeriCorps members will spruce up area parks this summer.

Both Souris Basin Planning Council and Strengthen ND received substantial federal funds, aimed at bolstering capacity for local non-profits with a combined total of 54 AmeriCorps members.

United Way of Cass and Clay, with over $120,000 in federal funds, aims to focus on Education, Employment, and English Learning via 12 AmeriCorps members.

South East Education Cooperative secured the lion’s share with two separate grants. The Reading and Math Corps gained almost $700,000 for their reading and math programs, while the Educator Corps will channel their funds towards early childhood education.

North Dakota has been a hub for community service since 1994, with over 2,500 residents serving 2.8 million hours. AmeriCorps members have attracted volunteers for sponsored projects, and an expected 191 residents will join for 2023-24, fostering a strong spirit of service.

For those interested in AmeriCorps' mission and considering either sponsorship or direct involvement, further details are available on their official website.

AmeriCorps stands as a crucial federal agency, acting as a bridge between individuals and organizations. Through service and volunteering, they aim to address some of the nation's most significant challenges.
