N.D. Specialty Crop Forecasts Down Double Digits



Based on September 1 conditions, North Dakota's 2022 soybean crop is forecast at 192 million bushels, up 6% from last year according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area for harvest, at 5.65 million acres, is down 21% from 2021. Average yield is forecast at 34 bushels per acre, up 8.5 bushels from last year.

Corn production is forecast at 381 million bushels, down slightly from last year's production. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 2.70 million acres, down 26% from 2021. Average yield is forecast at 141 bushels per acre, up 36 bushels from last year.

Sugarbeet production is forecast at 6.33 million tons, down 2% from last year's crop. Area for harvest, at 249,000 acres, is up 12% from last year. Yield is forecast at 25.4 tons per acre, down 3.8 tons from last year.

Lentil production is forecast at 1.20 million cwt, up 27% from a year ago. Area for harvest, at 100,000 acres, is down 12% from 2021. Average yield is forecast at 1,200 pounds per acre, up 370 pounds from last year.

Dry edible pea production is forecast at 2.77 million cwt, down 23% from last year. Area for harvest, at 210,000 acres, is down 13% from last year. Yield is forecast at 1,320 pounds per acre, down 160 pounds from 2021.

All Chickpeas production is forecast at 215,000 cwt, up 6% from a year ago. Area for harvest, at 12,500 acres, is down 20% from last year. Yield is forecast at 1,720 pounds per acre, up 430 pounds from 2021.
