North Dakota ranchers have a new opportunity to learn about virtual fence technology through a series of Tailgate Tech Talk events hosted by North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension and Ducks Unlimited. These field events allow producers to see the technology in action while learning how it can improve grazing management and livestock production.
The program features demonstrations from ranchers already using virtual fence systems. Miranda Meehan, NDSU Extension Livestock Environmental Stewardship Specialist, explains that the events also include research findings from NDSU and practical information for producers interested in adopting the technology. The goal is to help ranchers understand how virtual fencing fits into different grazing systems.
Virtual fence technology is becoming more popular because it helps producers manage livestock without installing traditional fences. Special collars and digital boundaries guide cattle while giving ranchers greater flexibility in pasture management. The technology can also reduce labor while supporting conservation practices.
Interest in virtual fencing has grown quickly across North Dakota. In 2024, no producers in the state were using the technology. Today, several ranchers have adopted virtual fence systems with support from Ducks Unlimited and the Natural Resource Conservation Service.
Four Tailgate Tech Talk events are scheduled during late summer. They will take place on Aug. 18 near Rolette at Gurr Lake Angus, Aug. 20 near McLeod at the Sheyenne National Grasslands, Aug. 27 near Beulah at S Bar S Ranch, and Sept. 23 near McKenzie at Black Leg Ranch. Each event begins at 10 a.m.
Participants will also have the chance to compare several virtual fence products currently available to North Dakota producers. Representatives will demonstrate features from Vence, Halter, Nofence, and Gallagher eShepherd, helping ranchers understand the benefits and limitations of each system.
