North Dakota State University (NDSU) is preparing for its annual “Moos, Ewes and More” event, which gives families, young people, and animal lovers a chance to learn about livestock. The free event will take place October 24, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the NDSU Equine Center in Fargo, North Dakota.
The NDSU Department of Animal Sciences hosts the event and brings together livestock, university experts, students, and workers who care for animals on campus. Visitors can meet animals from several livestock units and learn more about the work involved in raising and caring for them. The event also gives visitors a closer look at animal science education and research at NDSU.
Visitors can see, hear, smell, and touch several types of livestock during the event. Animals include calves, pigs, sheep, and horses. These hands-on experiences help children and adults better understand animals and agriculture.
The event also provides an opportunity to learn about several areas of animal science. Experts share information about biology, genetics, hygiene, nutrition, and other topics related to livestock. These lessons help visitors understand how science plays an important role in animal health, food production, and agriculture.
Guests can also meet barn managers and workers who care for the animals at NDSU. Faculty and staff from the Department of Animal Sciences are available to explain their teaching and research activities. This allows visitors to ask questions and learn about different careers and educational opportunities related to animals.
Horse-drawn wagon rides are another popular part of the event. Keith Johnson and Bernie Johnson provide the wagon rides for attendees. The activity gives families an additional way to enjoy the event while visiting the NDSU Equine Center.
The event also includes a fun Halloween theme. Attendees are invited to wear Halloween costumes or dress as their favorite animals. This gives children an opportunity to take part in the event while learning about livestock and agriculture.
Events such as “Moos, Ewes and More” help connect communities with agricultural education. Many people may not have regular opportunities to see livestock up close or learn how animals are cared for. A hands-on event can help visitors understand the connection between animals, science, farmers, ranchers, and the food system.
The NDSU Department of Animal Sciences uses teaching, research, and outreach to share information about livestock and animal care. Events like this also introduce young people to agriculture and help them learn about the science behind livestock production.
The NDSU Equine Center is located at 5140 19th Ave. N in Fargo. Families and others interested in animals can attend the free event and take part in the activities throughout the day.
