Only N.D. Sugarbeet Production Up after 2021 Drought

Corn for grain production in North Dakota based on yearend surveys is estimated at 381 million bushels, up 54% from 2020, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 105 bushels per acre is down 34 bushels from last year. Farmers harvested a record high 3.63 million acres of corn for grain, up 104% from 2020. Corn for silage production totaled 1.88 million tons, down 17% from 2020. Yield, at 7.5 tons per acre, is down 8.0 tons per acre from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 250,000 acres, is up 72% from 2020. Total acreage planted for all purposes is a record high 4.10 million acres, up 110% from last year.

Soybean production for 2021 totaled 182 million bushels, down 6% from 2020. Yield, at 25.5 bushels per acre, is down 8.5 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at a record high 7.12 million acres, is up 25% from 2020. Total acreage planted is a record high 7.25 million acres, up 26% from last year.

Potato production is 21.8 million cwt., down 9% from 2020. Yield, at 290 cwt per acre, is down 50 cwt. from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 75,000 acres, is up 5,000 acres from 2020. Total acreage planted is 76,000 acres, up 4,000 acres from last year.

Oil sunflower production in 2021 is 716 million pounds, down 40% from last year. Yield, at 1,590 pounds per acre, is down 290 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 450,000 acres, is down 29% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 460,000 acres, down 28% from last year. Nonoil sunflower production of 46.4 million pounds is down 70% from last year. Yield, at 1,450 pounds per acre, is down 360 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record low 32,000 acres, is down 53,000 from 2020. Total acreage planted is a record low 34,000 acres, down 63% from last year.

Canola production of 2.30 billion pounds is down 21% from last year. Yield of 1,340 pounds per acre is down 620 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record high 1.72 million acres, is up 230,000 acres from 2020. Total acreage planted is a record high 1.75 million acres, up 16% from last year.

Flaxseed production is estimated at 2.22 million bushels, down 45% from 2020. Yield per harvested acre is estimated at 13.0 bushels, down 8.0 bushels from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 171,000, down from 194,000 a year ago. Total acreage planted is 190,000 acres, down 5% from last year.

Dry edible bean production of 6.40 million cwt. is down 50% from a year ago. Yield, at 1,030 pounds per acre, is down 600 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 620,000 acres, is down 21% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 660,000 acres, down 19% from last year.

All Chickpea production in 2021 is 203,000 cwt, down 27% from last year. Yield, at 1,290 pounds per acre, is down 730 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 15,700 acres, is up 15% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 16,300 acres, up 15% from last year.

Dry edible pea production is estimated at 3.58 million cwt, down 54% from 2020. Yield is estimated at 1,480 pounds per acre, down 930 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 242,000, down 25% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 255,000 acres, down 22% from last year.

Lentil production is estimated at 946,000 cwt, down 16% from the previous year. Yield is estimated at 830 pounds per acre, down 600 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 114,000, up 44% from 2020. Total acreage planted is 120,000 acres, up 50% from last year.

Sugarbeet production is estimated at 6.48 million tons, up 19% from last year. Yield is estimated at 29.2 tons per acre, up 4.3 tons from the previous year. Acres harvested are estimated at 222,000 acres, up 2% from the previous year. Total acreage planted is 226,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from last year.

Alfalfa hay production, at 828,000 tons, is down 62% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 0.90 tons per acre, is down 0.90 ton per acre from 2020. Area harvested for dry hay, at 920,000 acres, is down 25% from 2020. Seedings of alfalfa during 2021 totaled 30,000 acres, down 45,000 acres from the year earlier. All other hay production, at 1.27 million tons, is down 10% from 2020. Average yield, at 1.15 tons per acre, is down 0.25 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested at 1.10 million acres, is up 10% from 2020.

Principal crop area planted totaled 24.1 million acres, up 15% from 2020. Area harvested, at 22.8 million acres, is up 12% from last year. North Dakota principal crop acres include corn, oats, barley, rye, winter wheat, Durum wheat, other spring wheat, soybeans, sunflower, dry edible beans, chickpeas, potatoes, canola, sugarbeets, and all hay. Double cropped acres and unharvested small grains planted as cover crops are also included.
