N.D. Corn and Soybean Production Forecasts Up from 2020 Levels

Based on October 1 conditions, North Dakota's 2021 corn production is forecast at 409 million bushels, up 65% from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at a record 3.82 million acres, is up 115% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 107 bushels per acre, down 32 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 189 million bushels, down 3% from last year. Area for harvest, at a record 7.25 million acres, is up 27% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 26 bushels per acre, down 8.0 bushels from last year.

Dry edible bean production is forecast at 5.95 million cwt, down 53% from 2020. Area for harvest, at 640,000 acres, is down 18% from last year. Yield is estimated at 930 pounds per acre, down 700 pounds per acre from last year.

Sugarbeet production is forecast at 6.03 million tons, up 11% from 2020. Area for harvest, at 224,000 acres, is up 2% from last year. Yield is estimated at 26.9 tons per acre, up 2.0 tons per acre from a year ago.

All sunflower production is forecast at 755 million pounds, down 44% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 472,000 acres, is down 34% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 1,600 pounds per acre, down 272 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 32,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 440,000 acres.

Canola production is forecast at a record 1.89 billion pounds, down 35% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at a record 1.72 million acres, is up 15% from 2020. Yield is a record low forecast at 1,100 pounds per acre, down 860 pounds per acre from a year ago.

Alfalfa hay production, at 1.13 million tons, is down 49% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.25 million acres, is up 2% from a year ago. Yield of 0.90 ton per acre, is down 0.90 ton from 2020. All other hay production, at 1.27 million tons, is down 10% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.15 million acres, is up 15% from a year ago. Yield of 1.10 tons per acre, is down 0.30 ton from 2020.
