Extension's Johnson Featured in MoneyGeek Stories
North Dakota Ag Connection - 10/23/2020

Carrie Johnson, Extension personal and family finance specialist and associate professor, is featured in two recent articles published by MoneyGeek.com.

The articles are "The Best Cheap Car Insurance Companies and Quotes for 2020" by freelance writer Karen Warren, and "The Best Cheap Car Insurance in North Dakota for 2020."

In the first article, Johnson was one of 10 experts interviewed. Her advice includes:

- "Because premium cost can vary widely between companies, a consumer needs to compare apples to apples. When comparing, make sure you are verifying that you are looking at policies that have the same deductible and coverage."

- "Paying a monthly premium instead of semi-annually may be the easiest way to make sure you have budgeted for your auto insurance expense. It is easier to fit fixed expenses into a budget than occasional expenses. Most insurance companies will charge a small fee if you choose to pay your premium monthly, but it is typically only a few dollars a month.

In the North Dakota article, Johnson's suggestions include:

- "When looking for the best auto insurance coverage for you, do your homework. Be an informed consumer and compare multiple companies before making a final decision. Ask friends and family members what auto insurance company they use and why. Ask if they have ever had a bad experience with a company and what happened."

- "Getting quotes from multiple insurance companies and comparing similar policies is the best way to find affordable car insurance. Drivers could also use an insurance broker to do this leg work for them. An insurance broker represents the buyer instead of the insurance company. The driver would tell the broker what type of coverage they want, and then the broker will provide the driver with a list of options. The broker will also assist the driver in obtaining the coverage they choose."

Johnson joined NDSU in 2016. She earned her bachelor's degree from Dakota State University, Madison, S.D.; master's degree at South Dakota State University, Brookings; and her doctorate in family and consumer science education at Iowa State University, Ames.
