N.D. Winter Wheat Production, Oats, Alfalfa Up Triple Digits

Based on August 1 conditions, North Dakota's 2022 spring wheat crop is forecast at 273 million bushels, up 56% from last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Harvested acreage is estimated at 5.25 million acres, up 1% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 52 bushels per acre, up 18.5 bushels from 2021 and a record high if realized.

Durum wheat production is forecast at 37.7 million bushels, up 92% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 920,000, up 12% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre, up 17.0 bushels from last year.

Winter wheat production is forecast at 5.22 million bushels, up 164% from last year's crop. Harvested acreage is estimated at 90,000 acres, up 50% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 58 bushels per acre, up 25.0 bushels from 2021 and a record high if realized.

Barley production is forecast at 34.1 million bushels, up 55% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 550,000 acres, up 28% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 62 bushels per acre, up 11 bushels from 2021.

Oat production is forecast at 10.7 million bushels, up 168% from last year. Harvested acreage at 120,000 acres, up 45% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 89 bushels per acre, up 41 bushels from last year and a record high if realized.

Corn production is forecast at 399 million bushels, up 5% from 2021. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 2.75 million acres, down 24% from last year. Average yield is forecast at 145 bushels per acre, up 40 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 198 million bushels, up 9% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.65 million acres, is down 21% from last year. Average yield per acre is forecast at 35 bushels per acre, up 9.5 bushels from 2021.

Alfalfa hay production is forecast at 2.21 million tons, up 166% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.05 million acres, up 14% from a year ago. Expected yield, at 2.10 tons per acre, is up 1.20 tons from last year. All other hay production is forecast at 2.13 million tons, up 68% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.25 million acres, up 14% from a year ago. Expected yield, at 1.70 tons per acre, is up 0.55 ton from last year.

Dry edible bean production is forecast at 8.96 million cwt, up 40% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 560,000, down 10% from a year ago. The average yield is forecast at 1,600 pounds per acre, up 570 pounds from last year. Acres planted by class are as follows: Pinto, 418,000; Black, 74,000; Navy, 56,000; Small Red, 14,000; Pink, 5,500; Dark Red Kidney, (D); Great Northern, (D); Cranberry, (D); All Other, (D). D is withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.

Sugarbeet production is forecast at 6.02 million tons, down 7% from 2021. Area for harvest, at 235,000 acres, is up 6% from last year. Yield is estimated at 25.6 tons per acre, down 3.6 tons from last year.
