North Dakota Medical Response Teams Assisting Florida
North Dakota Ag Connection - 09/18/2017

The North Dakota Department of Health, Emergency Preparedness & Response section has deployed Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) medical response teams to Florida to assist the hurricane-impacted state. The 23 team members, comprised of paramedics, registered nurses and EMTs, are currently supporting vulnerable populations shelters in the Florida Keys located at Island Christian School, Marathon High School, Sugarloaf School and Key West High School. Florida requested personnel through the EMAC.

"We stand ready to support others impacted by disasters in their time of need," said Tim Wiedrich, EPR Section Chief. "Other states often look to North Dakota to help with response efforts due to our knowledge and experience. We are grateful to assist."

EMAC enables a disaster-impacted state to request and receive assistance from other member states quickly and efficiently. Congress has ratified EMAC in all 50 states, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Florida will reimburse North Dakota's costs as delineated in the EMAC request.

Qualified medical personnel interested in volunteering on future missions should visit www.ndhealth.gov/EPR/HP/PHEVR to become a member of the Public Health Emergency Volunteer Reserves/Medical Reserve Corps (PHEVFR/MRC).
