Produced Water and Oil Spill in Williams County
North Dakota Ag Connection - 08/19/2019

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) has been notified of a produced water and oil spill resulting from a tank overflow in Williams County. The tank is on a well pad owned and operated by Kraken Operating LLC.

The incident occurred about 16 miles northeast of Williston on August 15, and it was reported the same day. Crude oil and produced water flowed from the heater/treater into a production tank causing the tank to overflow.

Produced water is a byproduct of oil and gas development.

Initial estimates indicate approximately 200 barrels of produced water and oil were released with about 10 barrels migrating off the well pad, impacting rangeland. Personnel from the NDDEQ are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
