Rural Development Helps Break Ground in New Salem
North Dakota Ag Connection - 10/20/2016

The New Salem-Almont School District along with USDA Rural Development broke ground on a community fitness center in New Salem.

"When we think about quality of life, a key part of that quality is good health. This is a center that is for everybody--students, community members, athletes, all people who want to improve their health and improve their life. Now they will have a convenient place to do that as a community," said Ryan Taylor, USDA Rural Development state director. "I am glad we could lend a hand, and pitch in with the New Salem and Almont communities."

The new fitness center will be a 40 by 80 foot building located 300 feet from the existing school. Students currently have no access to fitness programs or facilities, so the center will be utilized by the school district for physical education classes and extra-curricular athletic training. The public will also have access to the facility and its equipment.

Through the community facilities program, USDA Rural Development approved a $77,500 grant for construction costs. Additional financing will be provided by the New Salem-Almont School District and the community.

The project is planned to be completed by the end of 2016. To learn more about USDA Rural Development programs, please visit www.rd.usda.gov/nd.
