North Dakota Ag Connection - 01/22/2019

Joe Ikley has joined the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences as an assistant professor and Extension weed specialist.

Ikley is a native of Maryland and earned his bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences and technology and his master's degree in plant sciences from the University of Maryland in College Park, where he worked to control glyphosate-resistant horseweed in soybean. He earned his doctorate in weed science from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., working with alternative weed hosts of Goss's wilt of corn.

While at Purdue, Ikley also conducted four years of research on difficult-to-control weeds, including glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth, waterhemp and horseweed. He spent the last two years there working full time in Extension weed science.

At NDSU, Ikley will focus on providing Extension material for identification and control of new and emerging weeds in North Dakota. His research will focus on control of herbicide-resistant and other difficult-to-control weeds in row crops in North Dakota.

Ikley said, "I am excited to join a strong weed science program at NDSU and provide Extension leadership for weed control across the state."
