Most of N.D. Receives Some Rain, More Needed

For the week ending Sunday, most of the State received some much needed rain, especially the western half, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This recent moisture benefitted development of late-season row crops. More precipitation was needed during the remainder of the row crop growing season to ensure good crop development. Temperatures across the State averaged one to six degrees below normal. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 28 percent very short, 39 short, 32 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 26 percent very short, 37 short, 36 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Corn condition rated 9 percent very poor, 16 poor, 35 fair, 36 good, and 4 excellent. Corn silking was 85 percent, near 86 last year and 87 for the five-year average. Dough was 20 percent, near 19 last year and 21 average.

Soybean condition rated 7 percent very poor, 17 poor, 39 fair, 35 good, and 2 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 90 percent, behind 95 last year, and near 94 average. Setting pods was 60 percent, behind 75 last year and 74 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 22 percent very poor, 23 poor, 27 fair, 27 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat mature was 94 percent. Harvested was 57 percent, behind 69 last year.

Spring wheat condition rated 20 percent very poor, 20 poor, 27 fair, 27 good, and 6 excellent. Spring wheat coloring was 92 percent, near 93 last year, but ahead of 81 average. Harvested was 16 percent, near 19 last year and 17 average.

Barley condition rated 15 percent very poor, 15 poor, 32 fair, 34 good, and 4 excellent. Barley coloring was 97 percent, near 98 last year, but ahead of 87 average. Mature was 84 percent. Harvested was 25 percent, behind 31 last year, but near 24 average.

Oats condition rated 28 percent very poor, 27 poor, 31 fair, 13 good, and 1 excellent. Oats coloring was 94 percent, near 95 last year, but ahead of 83 average. Mature was 75 percent. Harvested was 29 percent, behind 42 last year, but ahead of 24 average.

Sunflowers condition rated 18 percent very poor, 25 poor, 34 fair, 22 good, and 1 excellent. Sunflowers blooming was 69 percent, behind 80 last year, but ahead of 58 average.

Dry edible beans condition rated 6 percent very poor, 15 poor, 28 fair, 44 good, and 7 excellent. Dry edible beans blooming was 95 percent, near 96 last year and 91 average. Setting pods was 61 percent, behind 79 last year and 69 average.

Durum wheat condition rated 13 percent very poor, 19 poor, 51 fair, 17 good, and 0 excellent. Durum wheat coloring was 90 percent, well ahead of 69 last year and 62 average. Mature was 35 percent.

Canola condition rated 10 percent very poor, 16 poor, 32 fair, 41 good, and 1 excellent. Canola coloring was 80 percent, ahead of 74 last year and 69 average.

Flaxseed condition rated 22 percent very poor, 24 poor, 35 fair, 18 good, and 1 excellent. Flaxseed coloring was 69 percent, near 70 last year, but ahead of 52 average.

Dry edible peas condition rated 16 percent very poor, 20 poor, 45 fair, 18 good, and 1 excellent. Dry edible peas dropping leaves was 93 percent, near 90 last year. Harvested was 46 percent, near 50 last year.

Potato condition rated 1 percent very poor, 11 poor, 20 fair, 53 good, and 15 excellent. Potatoes blooming was 96 percent. Rows closed was 87 percent, near 88 last year, but ahead of 79 average. Vines dry was 5 percent, equal to last year.

Alfalfa condition rated 47 percent very poor, 29 poor, 19 fair, 5 good, and 0 excellent. Alfalfa second cutting was 62 percent complete, near 64 last year and 58 average.

Sugarbeets condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 8 fair, 44 good, and 48 excellent.

Pasture and range conditions rated 46 percent very poor, 32 poor, 17 fair, 5 good, and 0 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 26 percent very short, 39 short, 35 adequate, and 0 surplus.
