Dry Bean Acres Down

USDA's June Planted Acreage Report lists 1,834,000 acres of dry beans planted this year, down 12 percent from last year, and almost 10 percent below the March Prospective Plantings Report estimate.

Northarvest Bean Growers Association, Frazee, Minn., reports that North Dakota dry bean planted acreage is put at 550,000, a 22 percent decline from 2017 and 11 percent below the March estimate. Minnesota's dry bean acreage is estimated at 165,000, down 5,000 acres from last year and 20,000 acres less than March. Chickpea acres in the U.S. total 662,000 acres, up 7 percent from last year, but down slightly from the March intentions. North Dakota farmers planted 7 percent more chickpeas than last year.

Statistics Canada reports a nearly 10 percent decline in dry bean planted acres compared to 2017. However, the 301,000 planted acres are 22.5 percent more than the 245,700 estimated in late April. Chickpea acreage in Canada is nearly triple last year's plantings. Statscan pegs chickpea acreage at 469,000 acres this year, compared to 160,000 last year.
