13 Percent of 2016 Potato Crop in Storage

North Dakota growers, dealers, and processors held 2.60 million hundredweight (cwt) of potatoes in storage on June 1, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Current stocks represent 13 percent of the 2016 production. Total stocks are defined as all potatoes on hand, regardless of use, including those that will be lost through future shrinkage and dumping.

The 13 major potato States held 55.5 million cwt of potatoes in storage June 1, 2017, up 8 percent from June 1, 2016. Potatoes in storage accounted for 14 percent of the fall storage States' 2016 production, 1 percent more than last year. Potato disappearance, at 350 million cwt, was up 1 percent from June 1, 2016. Season-to-date shrink and loss, at 25.4 million cwt, was 9 percent higher than the same time last year. Processors in the 8 major States used 183 million cwt of potatoes for the season, up 2 percent from June 2016.
