Produced Water Spill in Mercer County
North Dakota Ag Connection - 01/17/2018

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) on Tuesday reported that it has been notified of a produced water spill in Mercer County resulting from a tank valve failure.

The tank was being used in a carbon storage study by the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC). Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas development.

The spill was discovered on Jan. 13, approximately 2.5 miles north of Golden Valley and was reported on Jan. 14. Initial estimates indicate approximately 150 barrels of produced water were released, with less than five barrels leaving the pad. Personnel from the NDDoH are on site and will continue to monitor the cleanup activities.
