Rain Slows Eastern N.D. Planting Progress

For the week ending Sunday, cooler temperatures prevailed most of the week as they averaged two to six degrees below normal across most of the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Planting progress slowed in the eastern third of North Dakota, as rainfall was received. Less rain fell over the western two-thirds of the State, and had a smaller effect on fieldwork activities. There were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 21 short, 70 adequate, and 6 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 14 short, 78 adequate, and 7 surplus.

Corn planted was 82 percent, behind 89 last year, but ahead of 73 for the five-year average. Emerged was 38 percent, behind 45 last year, but ahead of 31 average.

Soybeans planted was 57 percent, well behind 77 last year, but ahead 49 average. Emerged was 10 percent, behind 19 last year, but equal to average. Winter wheat condition rated 4 percent very poor, 3 poor, 19 fair, 69 good, and 5 excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 60 percent, behind 67 last year. Headed was 6 percent, near 3 last year.

Spring wheat planted was 88 percent, behind 93 last year, but ahead of 75 average. Emerged was 56 percent, behind 72 last year, but ahead of 51 average. Jointed was 4 percent.

Barley condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 20 fair, 68 good, and 10 excellent. Barley planted was 89 percent, near 93 last year, but ahead of 72 average. Emerged was 57 percent, behind 71 last year, but ahead 47 average. Jointed was 5 percent.

Oats condition rated 2 percent very poor, 4 poor, 32 fair, 58 good, and 4 excellent. Oats planted was 87 percent, near 91 last year, but ahead of 75 average. Emerged was 54 percent, behind 67 last year, but ahead of 48 average. Jointed was 9 percent, ahead of 3 last year. Headed was 1 percent.

Sunflower planted was 31 percent, behind 42 last year, but ahead of 24 average.

Dry beans planted was 41 percent, behind 55 last year, but ahead of 31 average. Emerged was 5 percent.

Durum wheat planted was 72 percent, behind 81 last year, but ahead of 64 average. Emerged was 36 percent, well behind 62 last year, and near 38 average. Jointed was 10 percent.

Canola planted was 72 percent, behind 82 last year, but ahead 63 average. Emerged was 30 percent, behind 47 last year and near 32.

Flaxseed planted was 54 percent, behind 72 last year, but ahead of 47 average. Emerged was 17 percent, well behind 37 last year.

Dry edible peas planted was 92 percent, near 93 last year, but ahead of 77 average. Emerged was 51 percent, well behind 77 last year, but ahead of 43 average.

Potatoes planted was 60 percent, well behind 84 last year, but ahead of 55 average. Emerged was 7 percent, behind 19 last year.

Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 10 poor, 35 fair, 50 good, and 4 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 1 percent very short, 8 short, 86 adequate, and 5 surplus.
