14th Annual 'Fill the Dome' to Launch Nov. 23
North Dakota Ag Connection - 11/17/2020

For the 14th year in a row, students in the Fargo area will participate in the annual Fill the Dome event, which will bring needed food items and monetary donations to the Great Plains Food Bank to help struggling seniors, children and families in the area. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will look different in 2020.

Students will begin collecting food items inside their schools Nov. 23 through Dec. 17. For the first time in the event's history, no food will touch the floor of the Fargodome and instead will be directly picked up from each school by the Great Plains Food Bank.

A new element in 2020, each school will host their own virtual food drive where donations can be made online to benefit the Great Plains Food Bank. Additionally, as they have in the past, local Hornbacher's stores will be selling food bags to be donated to the event until Nov. 21.

Since 2007, Fill the Dome has collected nearly 2.3 million pounds of food to benefit food insecure children, seniors and families in the area along with raising more than $600,000, which equates to more than 3.7 million meals being provided, in the history of the event.

Now in its 38th year, the Great Plains Food Bank serves as North Dakota's only food bank. Its partner network includes 213 food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and other charitable feeding programs operating in 99 communities across N.D. and Clay County, Minn. Since 1983, the Great Plains Food Bank, through its array of innovative direct service programs and partner network, have distributed more than 170 million meals to children, seniors, and families in need. The Great Plains Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation's food bank network, and was named the Not-for-Profit of the Year in 2018 by the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce.
