North Dakotans Pleased with EPA Dicamba Decision
North Dakota Ag Connection - 10/29/2020

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the approval of two new five-year Dicamba registrations and extended the registration of an additional Dicamba product for over-the-top (OTT) use on Dicamba-tolerant cotton and soybeans. All of the registrations include new control measures to manage off-site movement.

The two new approved products are XtendiMax with VaporGrip Technology and Engenia Herbicide and the registration of Tavium Plus VaporGrip Technology has been extended. The registrations will expire in 2025.

"The EPA has reviewed available information and science and has conducted assessments to ensure any concerns expressed by the latest court decision have been addressed," Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said. "We appreciate the certainty this gives our farmers in order to make plans for the next growing season. This decision gives growers more options when choosing products to control herbicide-resistant weeds."

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture will review the labels once they are submitted as part of the state registration process.

"We are pleased to see the EPA has approved a new registration for dicamba," said NDFB President Daryl Lies. "This provides farmers in North Dakota another tool as they plan for the 2021 growing season."

"This past year, farmers who used dicamba faced uncertainty when the courts stepped-in, causing added stress to agriculture," said Lies. "The new registration relieves some of the stress farmers have as they start to plan for next spring."

EPA's registration contains the following control measures to manage off-site movement:

- Requires an approved pH-buffering agent (also called Volatility Reduction Agent or VRA) to be tank-mixed with OTT Dicamba products prior to all applications to control volatility.

- Requires a downwind buffer of 240 feet and 310 feet in areas where listed species are located.

- Prohibits OTT application of Dicamba on soybeans after June 30 and cotton after July 30.

- Simplifies the label and use directions so that growers can more easily determine when and how to properly apply Dicamba.
