Burgum Thanks Students for 'Fill the Dome' Efforts

Gov. Doug Burgum Tuesday shared his gratitude with students, corporate sponsors and community donors for their joint efforts to "Fill the Dome" to help alleviate hunger in the Fargo-Moorhead area.

For the past 11 years, area high school students have come together with the common goal to fight hunger in the community and fill the Fargodome's floor with donated food. Prior to this year, the student-led effort had collected more than 2.1 million pounds of food -- enough for over 4 million meals -- and raised more than $500,000 toward ending hunger in the F-M area.

This year, more than 50 schools in North Dakota and Minnesota, along with dozens of local businesses, worked together to reach their goal of "DeCANstructing Hunger; CANstructing a Better Future," raising enough food for more than 300,000 meals.

Burgum said Fill the Dome is not only a great charitable project, it's also a great source of learning for the students. He challenged students to continue to find other areas where they can have a positive impact on their communities.

"Thanksgiving and the start of the holiday season is a time to be grateful and reflect on all that we have, yet many of our community members continue to struggle with hunger," said Burgum, whose three children all participated in Fill the Dome in past years. "This student-led event has had a profound impact on our state, and Kathryn and I are deeply grateful for these students' dedication to making a difference in their communities."
