North Dakota Crops Continue Showing Stress from Drought

For the week ending Sunday, there were 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 28% very short, 36% short, 34% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 42% very short, 32% short, 25% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Soybean condition rated 15% very poor, 27% poor, 42% fair, 15% good, and 1% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 67%, ahead of 54% last year and 53% for the five-year average. Harvested was 4%, near 1% last year and 2% average.

Spring wheat harvested was 97%, ahead of 88% last year and 89% average.

Durum wheat harvested was 96%, ahead of 84% last year and 78% average.

Winter wheat planted was 24%, ahead of 13% last year and 15% average.

Corn condition rated 15% very poor, 27% poor, 41% fair, 17% good, and 0% excellent. Corn dough was 98%, equal to last year, and near 96% average. Dented was 77%, ahead of 66% last year and 65% average. Mature was 22%, ahead of 16% last year and 17% average.

Canola harvested was 72%, ahead of 66% last year, and near 71% average.

Sugarbeet condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 29% fair, 51% good, and 14% excellent. Sugarbeets harvested was 7%, near 10% last year and 9% average.

Oats harvested was 97%, near 93% last year, and ahead of 91% average.

Sunflower condition rated 11% very poor, 28% poor, 37% fair, 22% good, and 2% excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dry was 90%, near 87% last year, and ahead of 85% average. Bracts turned yellow was 65%, near 63% last year and 62% average. Bracts turned brown was 22%, behind 27% last year, but near 21% average.

Flaxseed harvested was 81%, ahead of 68% last year and 66% average.

Potato condition rated 5% very poor, 21% poor, 54% fair, 18% good, and 2% excellent. Potatoes vines dry was 69%, behind 80% last year and 75% average. Harvested was 13%, behind 18% last year, and equal to average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 16% very poor, 30% poor, 37% fair, 16% good, and 1% excellent. Dry edible beans dropping leaves was 93%, ahead of 88% last year, and near 89% average. Harvested was 39%, ahead of 26% last year and 32% average.

Alfalfa condition rated 36% very poor, 37% poor, 20% fair, 6% good, and 1% excellent. Alfalfa second cutting was 91%, behind 100% last year and 96% average.

Lentils harvested was 93%, well ahead of 71% last year, and ahead of 74% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 47% very poor, 30% poor, 19% fair, 4% good, and 0% excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 48% very short, 35% short, 17% adequate, and 0% surplus.
