COVID Forces U.S. Mink Pelt Production to Drop by Half

Mink pelt production in the United States in 2020 totaled 1.41 million pelts, down 49 percent from 2019. Wisconsin, the largest mink producing state, produced 403,540 pelts. Utah, the second largest producer, had 386,880 pelts.

The number of pelts, by color class, as a percent of the total United States production in 2020 is as follows: Black at 52 percent, Mahogany at 19 percent, White at 6 percent, and Sapphire at 5 percent. The remaining color classes accounted for 18 percent.

Value of pelts produced during the 2020 crop year was $47.4 million, down 19 percent from $58.4 million the prior year. The average price per pelt for the 2020 crop year was $33.70, up $12.40 from $21.30 in 2019.

Female mink bred to produce kits in 2021 totaled 323,560, down 10 percent from the previous year.
