Drought Monitor: Weather Runs Hot and Cold For the Week

Ample precipitation has fallen in recent weeks in the southern Plains, alleviating drought conditions.

According to today's Drought Monitor report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), that region, along with the South, received most of the rainfall in the United States for the week ending June 8.

Cooler temperatures also dominated those areas.

By contrast, dry conditions ruled the West, with warmer-than-normal temperatures covering California to the Dakotas.

Departures were 9-12 degrees above normal and even higher in the northern Plains.

A reassessment of conditions in several places in the West and northern Plains led to improvements, in light of some of the wetter conditions recently
