Annual Milk Production Rose by 1.8 Percent in 2016

The annual production of milk for the United States during 2016 was 212 billion pounds, 1.8 percent above 2015.

USDA figures show that production per cow averaged 22,774 pounds for the year, 378 pounds above 2015. The average annual rate of milk production per cow has increased 12.7 percent from 2007.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.41 billion pounds. Texas had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 995 million pounds of milk in January, up 19.2 percent from the same month last year.

Meanwhile, the average number of milk cows on farms in the United States during 2016 was 9.33 million head, up 0.2 percent from 2015. The average number of milk cows was revised down 5,000 head for 2016. The average annual number of milk cows has increased 1.5 percent from 2007.
